Homestead Cottage is home to many beautiful, refurbished, and handmade items. A space to give local artisans a more permanent space to display and sell their work. A perfect place to find a special furniture piece, home decor, or a unique gift!
Homestead Cottage was established in October of 2017 in its original location of a charming cottage in downtown West Point. Earlier that summer I began finding and refurbishing furniture and selling locally online as a side hustle to make extra money while I stayed home with my 3 children. My daughter, who was 12 at the time, came running inside one day from a bike ride and excitedly exclaimed, “Hey mom!! There’s a little store for rent downtown! Can you just open up a store and sell your furniture there? It would be so much fun!!!”
I thought it was so sweet but at the same time kind of laughed it off as “yeah right.” I had always dreamed of opening up a store, but I never really thought it would actually happen and just brushed it off. As we drove by the store almost daily, Faith would say, “Mom, can you just call the number on the sign?”
Finally, we stopped by the building together where I got the number from the window and decided to just call and check it out. After speaking to the owner, it seemed doable, but I was still not sure. The cottage started to consume my thoughts! I was still so nervous though, so I prayed hard and begged for a confirmation from above. God knows I love confirmations.
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” - Jeremiah 29:11 This is such a special verse to me. This verse came to me over and over for years after moving to West Point in 2013. It became my verse, my safe haven, it gave me hope and peace when I had always needed it. I didn’t know why it kept coming to me for years, but it was so hopeful, and I liked it.
That summer of 2017 after I had been praying about the store, we visited a Sunday sermon at the church where the kids had attended Vacation Bible School. The memory verse for that sermon was none other than, Jeremiah 29:11. We were even given blue memory scripture cards as we left the sermon. I explained to Faith after we left, how that was my special verse! And how God speaks to us through His word, and that the church service was a beautiful confirmation to my prayers about opening the store!
You see, God showed me that verse over and over for years to familiarize me with it. He knew that one day I would ask for confirmation, and I would recognize the verse right away! Later that same hot Sunday evening in August, Faith came running to me with 2 painted rocks she had found downtown. One was orange with a hand painted cottage on it, and the other had Jeremiah 29:11 painted on it. I knew at that moment this was another sign sent just for me!
Finally, After a lot of work to get the shop filled and ready, on October 1, 2017, Homestead Cottage had its Grand Opening!
In March of 2019, Homestead Cottage moved its location and teamed up with Bill and Juanita Cawley from The Exchange on Main (Formerly, West Point Antiques). Our two stores combined to create a unique shopping experience for customers. This concept allows multiple shopping experiences under one roof. Homestead Cottage, being a “store within a store,” had its debut in the antique store on March 9, 2019.
You will find a mix of old, new, refurbished, local, and homemade goods at Homestead Cottage. We would love you to visit us! You can find Homestead Cottage located inside of The Exchange On Main. 706 Main Street, West Point VA 23181. Our hours are Monday– Saturday 10–4 and Sundays 1–4.
